Teachers Encouraged to Reserve Popular STEAM Program Now for October 2020 Dates and Beyond
SAN SIMEON, CA, APRIL 7, 2020 – The Foundation at Hearst Castle announced today that despite the temporary closing of Hearst Castle due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the nonprofit organization continues to work with underserved middle schools across California to book future visits on a first come, first served basis. They expect to host 1,000+ students over the next school year, for free.
The Foundation works to sustain Hearst Castle, conserve its priceless art collection, and inspire disadvantaged youth. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit association raises funds via donation, annual membership, and charitable events.
The STEAM Program at the Castle, a key initiative, allows middle school-aged students to experience almost a full day at the unique museum, plus lessons at the San Simeon Pier and Hearst Memorial State Beach. The Foundation combines forces with Hearst Castle guides and CA State Parks interpreters to present the students with a customized tour aligned with STEAM curriculum, showing how pioneering architect Julia Morgan and her team used science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to build W.R. Hearst’s dream home — and ultimately how that might apply to their future education and career paths.
The charitable organization sponsors the impressive program, including logistics, transportation, lunch, and tours at no cost to schools or students. It aspires to expand youth programs by supporting the most engaged young visitors, inviting them back for special seminars and eventually providing college scholarships.
Given the closure of Hearst Castle for a while, The Foundation is working with State Parks staff to book STEAM Program groups for the next school year. This special program will be available by reservation only, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and can accommodate one bus load per day (maximum 50 guests). School principals, teachers, or youth group organizers are encouraged to reach out to The Foundation at Hearst Castle now to sign up.
