Progress on the Conservation of Hearst Castle’s Morning Room Ceiling

Treatment of the three central sections of the painted ceiling (c. 1425) in the Morning Room of Hearst Castle has been completed.

Gary Hulbert, the conservator who has devoted years to the project, will now address the perimeter, which was fabricated and painted by Julia Morgan’s craftsmen to fit the late medieval Spanish ceiling into the room.  Soot from the fireplace and tobacco accretions which accumulated during Hearst’s time, along with dust and grime, are being removed carefully as the treatment progresses.

This restoration project is funded by The Foundation at Hearst Castle and CA State Parks.
