Building Dreams with STEAM at Hearst Castle

When you first visited Hearst Castle, you probably saw the film Hearst Castle: Building a Dream in the Visitor Center theater. Well, our virtual education initiative, the STEAM Program at the Castle, endeavors to build dreams with STEAM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), using Hearst Castle and the wonderful example of pioneering female architect Julia Morgan as inspiration.

STEAM… by livestream

We prequalify and invite classes from middle schools in underserved areas of California to experience this free program. And as our virtual “field trip” becomes more popular, many schools reach out to us asking to book dates. Considering the high cost of bus transportation and the continued COVID cautiousness, we expect our multi-day, multimedia virtual program to continue long after children return to school and Hearst Castle reopens.

Hearst Castle - STEAM Program - Tracy Kosinski

The Foundation at Hearst Castle has partnered with Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument and State Park to launch a new, virtual education program. The multi-day online experience is an iteration of the innovative in-person opportunity the nonprofit organization introduced in 2018.

Multi-day, multi-activity program

Teachers and students receive a customized Padlet board with a timeline outlining the content and activities associated with their STEAM Program experience. Posts provide video introductions, STEAM activities directions, “field trip” Zoom meeting links, a place to post their project photos, as well as a gaming app for extra fun.

Teachers and students participating in the STEAM program at Hearst Castle follow a timeline on a custom Padlet board.

“The coastal program for the STEAM collaboration with FHC is a great way to get kids connected with nature. This experience allows students to discover that there are connections to nature everywhere. Showing them that something that seems as irrelevant as kelp can actually be found in their toothpaste! This program allows students to explore levels of detail and wonder all around them, showing them that what they do matters and that their actions are important.”

– Robin Hazard, MPA Interpreter I (PI), California State Parks, San Luis Obispo Coast District

Students share completed projects

Students and teachers have been thrilled with the program. And we have all enjoyed seeing the results of their STEAM activities posted on the Reflection board.

Currently, the San Simeon Beach portion of the experience includes an opportunity for the students to make colorful “kelp beads” at home. At the castle, after learning about Julia Morgan’s reinforced concrete structure, students make coasters made of concrete.
