Online Lecture Series

Julia Morgan: Her Life in Three Acts

Victoria Kastner will present a three-part lecture on Julia Morgan, created exclusively for the Foundation at Hearst Castle. She will share historic images and newly discovered information that she did not have room to include in her new book, Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect

Part One: Oakland and Paris

Victoria will discuss Julia Morgan’s personality, and reveal some of the challenges she experienced during her childhood—including her family’s financial woes and Julia’s own medical ailments. She’ll look at her college years, and their aftermath, when Julia decided to go to Paris and attempt to gain admission to the world-renowned architecture program at the École des Beaux-Arts. We’ll see France through Julia’s own descriptions, taken from her letters and sketches, and delve into some of the many hardships she overcame, in order to become the École des Beaux-Art’s first female graduate.
