The Mysterious Etruscan Chalice – Recollections from 2012

Re-joining the board of The Foundation at Hearst Castle brought back many wonderful memories of previous events supported by our fellow philanthropists. One of the most interesting of these unforgettable events was a discussion in 2012 about the treatment of an Etruscan chalice identified in Hearst Castle records as dating from the late 7th century BCE.  Apparently made of glossy black Etruscan bucchero (more on that type of ceramic in the glossary below), the chalice had come from the renowned collection of Cecil Baring, 3rd Lord Revelstoke, which was auctioned in London in 1935.

About WIP

A Museum Like No Other The estate popularly known as Hearst Castle is a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark located on the Central Coast of California, about 250 miles north of Los Angeles. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan between 1919 and 1947 as a residence for William Randolph Hearst, who died in 1951. Hearst Corporation deeded the estate to California in January 1958 and Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument® opened to the public that summer. The Castle serves as the key economic engine of the Central California Coast. Since then, the estate, and its considerable collection of art and antiques, has been open for public tours. Despite its location far from any urban center, the Castle welcomes around 700,000 visitors annually, making it a top tourist destination in California. Sustaining the Legacy Established in 1985, The Foundation at Hearst Castle (formerly called Friends of Hearst Castle) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cooperating association affiliated with Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument® and the San Luis Obispo Coast District of California State Parks. Through membership and fundraising, The Foundation supports educational, interpretive, and preservation programs for Hearst Castle and California State Parks. Through the Foundation, businesses, philanthropic organizations, and individuals can provide support and engagement with Hearst Castle. We provide membership opportunities, educational programs, and special events with the goal of enhancing understanding and appreciation, thereby enriching the visitor experience. Video – Our Mission: Preservation Video – Conservation of Hearst Castle Video – Julia Morgan: Hearst Castle Architect & Artist Key Initiatives Expand Educational Programs Illuminating and inspiring our next generation of visionaries and builders through science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The Foundation strives to give California middle school students from underrepresented communities an inspirational environment in which they can imagine the opportunity to realize their own dreams through the knowledge of STEAM and first-hand experience of jobs associated with the curriculum. Hearst Castle provides such and environment. Pioneering architect Julia Morgan—born January 20, 1872 in San Francisco, California, U.S. and died February 2, 1957—built Hearst Castle with the most advanced construction methods of her time. In spite of its Old World sensibility, the variety of disciplines required to construct one of the great treasures required to construct one of the great treasures of California proves contemporary even in today's world. The goal of the Foundation is to enlighten and challenge each student to assess his or her strengths, and to open their eyes to new possibilities, opportunities, and careers. The pilot program provides participating schools and organizations with tools to sharpen and refine each student’s unique aptitudes through the tangible applications of STEAM subjects, sparking interest and connection to Hearst Castle forever. Learn more about STEAM education Fund Full-Time Conservation Staff The lack of a full-time conservation staff hinders a coherent strategy to address the critical and immediate restoration needs of Hearst Castle. The Castle's 25,000 works of fine and decorative art need attention so that they can continue to inspire, educate, and delight more than 700,000 visitors expected each year at Hearst Castle. The Foundation at Hearst Castle has undertaken a number of conservation projects [...]

Hearst Castle Nonprofit to Host Extraordinary Holiday Dinner in the Iconic Refectory

A key fundraising event for the nonprofit association, in addition to a wine-paired dinner, guests will enjoy musical entertainment and professional yuletide guest portraits. San Simeon, CA, Sept. 23, 2019 — The Foundation at Hearst Castle will host a glamorous Holiday Feast at Hearst Castle on Saturday, December 7th… just like William Randolph Hearst used to do decades ago. The festively elegant evening will begin with a luxury coach ride to the hilltop castle, where guests will be welcomed with a sparkling wine reception on a heated terrace overlooking the renowned Neptune Pool, which reopened last Fall after a major restoration. Holiday revelers will continue to the iconic Refectory of William Randolph Hearst’s former estate for an epicurean feast to remember. Mr. Hearst and architect Julia Morgan named the dining room after the word for a monastery’s dining hall. Its high windows, bright silk banners, and gleaming silver candlesticks convey the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, but the mustard and ketchup bottles show that Mr. Hearst liked to keep things informal at his ranch. The Holiday Feast presents a rare opportunity to experience the legendary estate the way Mr. Hearst’s guests enjoyed it in the 1920s and 30s, albeit perhaps a bit more posh. The evening of December 7th will be drenched in history and a level of formality not often experienced on the Central Coast. No more than 75 guests will delight in this year’s fundraising fête. Past menus have included hors d’oeuvres of lobster, foie gras and oysters, and courses of crispy duck confit with mushrooms and goat cheese, braised beef short rib with mascarpone polenta and gremolata, and a dessert of molten-center chocolate soufflé cake with espresso ice cream sandwich and bourbon- chocolate truffle. This year will serve equally impressive gourmet fare accompanied by fine wines. This fundraising event is only open to members of The Foundation at Hearst Castle. Annual membership starts at $500/year or $42/month; however, anyone is welcome to become a member. Reservations for the Holiday Feast will be limited to 75 guests and require an additional donation of $1500/person until October 31st, when the requirement will increase.  This year, The Foundation is focused on raising funds for full-time conservation staff, as well as expanding their STEAM Program, designed to inspire underserved middle school students across California. The Holiday Feast — although sure to be absolutely luxurious — will be carefully produced to maximize net revenues while providing attendees the ultimate holiday experience at Hearst Castle. The black-tie affair is limited to 75 guests. To make a reservation, click here. To become a member, click here. About The Foundation The Foundation at Hearst Castle’s mission is to support the conservation and restoration of Hearst Castle, and to offer youth programs for underserved middle school students — to enhance the appreciation of the art and architecture of this world-class museum and monument, ultimately enriching the visitor experience and inspiring future generations of visionaries.
